Web Hosting - Linux: What can and can't be done on Linux cPanel services


Aim of this article

This article lays out some guidence on what can and what can't be done on Linux cPanel based Zen Web hosting accounts.

Things that can be done

You can do all the following things on a cPanel based Zen Web hosting account: (a full feature list can be found here)

  • Create HTML and PHP Web pages
  • Use Flash animations
  • Run CGI and perl scripts
  • View webstats for your Web site
  • Use multiple MySQL databases (number dependent on hosting package
    chosen)
  • Use client side javascript
  • Use Server Side includes (SSI)
  • Point multiple domain names to your account
  • Send e-mail from any internet connected computer using authenticated SMTP

Things that can't be done

You are not able to do the following things on a cPanel based Zen Web hosting account.

  • Create ASP Web pages - to do this you will require Activespace or .NETspace
  • Create ASP.NET Web pages - to do this you will require .NETspace
  • Connect to your MySQL databases from external Web sites
  • Have Shell access
  • Point multiple domain names to multiple subfolders of your account - to do this you will require either a gold, platinum or reseller account or multiple single accounts
  • Create Cron Jobs
  • Use the Cpanel server as a DNS server - you will need to use the DNSserver provided by your domain host
  • Install Frontpage Extensions

Zen wouldn't manage the site for you, but Joomla should work on the cPanel service.

Can Zen manage my website using a third party CMS like Joomla? Can the two systems be integrated?
